SC notice over delay in Tripura VC polls, Pradyot vows not to remain silent

Agartala, 25th August 2025:   The Supreme Court on Monday issued a notice on a plea seeking immediate directions to the Election Commission of India (ECI) and the Tripura State Election Commission to conduct the long-pending Village Committee elections under the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) Act, 1994.Tripura royal scion and Tipra Motha founder Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma, who had recently moved the apex court over the delay, said that the expiry of Village Committee tenures without timely polls has deprived the tribal population of their constitutional right to local self-governance.

The court has granted four weeks’ time to the ECI, the State Election Commission, and the Tripura Government to explain the reasons for the delay.“I thank the Hon’ble Supreme Court for issuing notice. Our people have suffered, and those responsible must be held accountable. Fear of losing elections cannot justify curtailing the democratic rights of Tripura’s indigenous people. I will not remain silent,” Pradyot said.

He further alleged that politics in Tripura has often exploited the emotions of indigenous communities, keeping them divided. “Many do not want our children to get proper education or to write Kokborok in Roman script. Unlike the Nagas and Mizos, we remain divided instead of supporting each other. Village Committee elections are essential for the development of our people,” he added.
