Agartala, 31st August 2025 : Residents and drivers in Sreepur under Fatikroy police station have voiced strong concerns over the deteriorating condition of National Highway 208 (alternative route), which connects Kailashahar to Kamalpur. The issue came to a head yesterday afternoon when several drivers publicly expressed their frustration to the media personnel citing the road’s poor condition as a daily hazard.
The highway was last constructed in 2023 by Jeet Construction, a company based in Haryana. Since then, locals allege that the firm has been involved in irregularities and corruption resulting in substandard work. Yesterday, local members openly questioned the quality of the construction, describing it as “extremely poor.”
Residents report that the road is now so degraded that passenger vehicles and ambulances struggle to pass through. Despite repeated appeals to the administration, no concrete action has been taken. On the night of August 29 last, two vehicles reportedly met with accidents on the same stretch and by yesterday afternoon, nearly 10 to 15 goods carriers were stranded due to impassable conditions.
The Kumarghat DGM office of NHIDCL is responsible for overseeing the project, but locals say the response has been inadequate. No officials visited the site following the incidents and only a JCB machine was sent, which residents interpreted as a token gesture rather than a serious intervention.
Angry residents have warned that if immediate repairs are not initiated, they will be forced to launch a protest. Their demands gained urgency after a central inspection team, dispatched under the directive of the Union Minister for Road Transport, recently surveyed the highway. Sources suggest that a report has been submitted to the minister, and repair work may commence following central approval.
