Sophie Turner confirmed as Lara Croft in upcoming ‘Tomb Raider’ series

 The upcoming live-action series of the popular ‘Tomb Raider’ game franchise will begin production in 2026, with ‘Game of Thrones’ actor Sophie Turner now confirmed for the role of the iconic Lara Croft.
A Prime Video production, the serialised adaptation of the highly popular video game franchise is officially set to begin production on Jan. 19, 2026, after it was first announced back in 2023 by the streaming service.
While the series production was greenlit in 2024, and Turner’s casting was announced the same year, nothing was fully confirmed by the streamer’s parent company Amazon, according to Variety.
Created and written by Phoebe Waller-Bridge, the series will be directed by Jonathan van Tulleken, and executive produced by Bridge, and Tulleken and Chad Hodge.
“I’m so excited to announce the formidable Sophie Turner as our Lara alongside this phenomenal creative team,” Waller-Bridge said.
“It’s not very often you get to make a show of this scale with a character you grew up loving. Everyone on board is wildly passionate about Lara and is as outrageous, brave, and hilarious as she is. Get your artefacts out… Croft is coming…”
Turner is the latest to don the mantle of Croft, and was previously portrayed by actress Alicia Vikander in the 2018 reboot, and by Angelina Jolie in the early 2000s.
Lara Croft became the most prominent female character in video games, owing to both her massive sex appeal and strong female agency.
While the early version of the character was highly sexualised, the franchise was later rebooted, with Croft becoming far more grounded than before.
Speaking on her casting, Turner said, “I am thrilled beyond measure, to be playing Lara Croft.
“She’s such an iconic character, who means so much to so many – and I am giving everything I’ve got. They’re massive shoes to fill, following in the steps of Angelina and Alicia with their powerhouse performances, but with Phoebe at the helm, we (and Lara) are all in very safe hands.
