Agartala, 4th September 2025: The Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) Kamalasagar Local Committee staged a surprise protest march this evening at Debipur Market demanding urgent repairs to the market infrastructure. The youth organization issued a one-week ultimatum to authorities, warning of intensified agitation including a panchayat gherao and indefinite market shutdown if their demands are not met.
The protest highlighted the deteriorating condition of Debipur Market, which becomes nearly inaccessible during rainfall due to knee-deep mud and accumulated waste. Shoppers and vendors alike have reportedly been avoiding the area due to foul odors and unhygienic surroundings.
Among the key concerns raised were: A dilapidated kirtan pandal with a rusted tin roof that collects stagnant rainwater; A neglected public toilet built during the Left regime, left unrepaired throughout the current administration’s tenure; and Overall market infrastructure, including sheds and drainage, in urgent need of renovation.
DYFI submitted a four-point charter of demands to the market association’s secretary, who acknowledged the legitimacy of the grievances. He confirmed that repeated appeals had been made to the local panchayat for repairs, but no action has been taken to date.
“The administration’s inaction has left both vendors and buyers in distress,” the secretary admitted, signaling a broader failure of governance.
DYFI leaders emphasized that their protest was in the interest of public welfare and warned that if repairs are not initiated within a week, they will escalate their movement to ensure accountability.
