Agartala, 12th September 2025 : Traffic on the Kailashahar-Kumarghat National Highway 208 has come to a standstill once again after a massive landslide struck late last night, causing severe distress for commuters. The incident took place in Ward No.1 of Shantipur under the Pabiacherra assembly constituency, where heavy rains triggered the collapse of soil and rocks onto the highway, also bringing down an electric pole near Shantipur School. Power supply in the surrounding areas was disrupted.
Residents reported being jolted awake around 3 a.m. by a loud noise. “When we came outside, we saw huge stones and soil blocking the highway, and an electric pole lying across the road. Vehicles were stuck on both sides throughout the night,” locals said. A passenger bus headed for Kumarghat railway station from Kailashahar had to turn back, adding to the chaos.
The situation was further aggravated in other parts of Unakoti district. In ward number 5 of Ujan Jalai, several trees were uprooted and blocked the national highway. “Even though the trees fell around 3 am, no action was taken by the administration till 11 am. This is worsening the problem,” alleged local resident Debabrata Deb.
Meanwhile, parts of NH-208 in the Balehar area have also caved in, sparking fears of more damage if repairs are delayed. Despite repeated repairs by the National Highway Authority, this vital lifeline of the district remains vulnerable to natural calamities.
With communication links paralyzed and daily life thrown into disarray, residents are now questioning the administration’s delay in response and anxiously waiting for swift alternative measures to ease their suffering.
