Agartala, 29th October 2025:    The Tripura Farm Workers Union (TFWU), Gomati District Committee, staged a protest march today demanding urgent action on a seven-point charter addressing labor rights, social welfare and rural employment schemes. The demonstration began at the CPI(M) office in Jamtala and proceeded through Central Road, Old Motor Stand, Mahadev Dighi, and Sub-Divisional Hospital Road, culminating at the District Magistrate’s office.

Led by Arbind Nandi, a five-member delegation submitted the demands to Additional District Magistrate Subhash Acharya, in the absence of the District Magistrate. The demands included: Ending discrimination in geo-tagging for housing schemes for the homeless, Implementing 200 days of work and Rs 340 daily wages under the MGNREGA scheme, Reinstating job cards that were previously cancelled, Increasing workdays and wages under the TUEP (urban employment) project, Including genuine beneficiaries who were excluded from welfare lists, and Providing pensions to all farm workers above 60 years of age.

Addressing the gathering, Bhanu Lal Saha, Vice President of the All India Committee of TFWU, condemned the prevailing socio-economic conditions in the state, describing them as chaotic and unsustainable. “People are struggling for daily bread. The promises made by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party remain unfulfilled, forcing workers to take to the streets to demand their right to work and survival,” he said.

Saha further alleged a breakdown in law and order, citing rising incidents of violence, including assaults and murders across age groups. He criticized the lack of employment opportunities under MGNREGA, inadequate healthcare access for the poor, and the deteriorating condition of public infrastructure. “Hospitals lack medicines, doctors, and nurses. Roads are in disrepair. The entire state is in turmoil,” he added, urging citizens from all walks of life to unite against the crisis.

Nitai Biswas, a state leader of the Farmers’ Association, also addressed the protest, echoing concerns over the government’s failure to uphold basic rights and services for rural communities.
