Agartala, 1st November 2025:  Tension gripped the Bishramganj area after a violent assault on a CPIM party worker allegedly carried out by Pandab Debbarma, former Sepahijala district general secretary of the Tipra Motha party.

The incident took place on the Barjala Road near a liquor outlet when Jonntu Debnath, a committed CPIM activist was reportedly attacked with a hot tawa (flat pan) by Debbarma, who accused him of being a “CPIM man.” Debnath was en route to his home in Barjala when the assault took place. He was rushed to Bishramganj Hospital for treatment and later filed a formal complaint at Bishramganj Police Station, supported by medical documentation.

Locals informed that Pandab Debbarma is widely feared across Bishramganj, Charilam, and his native village Bansibari under the jurisdiction of Bishalgarh Police Station. Residents describe him as a dominant figure in the hilly region, with a history of intimidation and alleged involvement in multiple incidents, particularly around election periods. Police personnel from both Bishramganj and Bishalgarh stations are said to be wary of confronting him.

The assault reportedly took place near the liquor counter along Barjala Road, not far from Debnath’s residence. Following the attack, Debnath has refrained from leaving his home, citing fear for his safety.

Debnath also named Shyamal Sinha of Lalsinghmura area as an accomplice in the assault. FIRs have been registered against both individuals.

As the investigation takes place, questions remain about whether police will take action against Debbarma, whose influence continues to cast a long shadow over the region.
