Agartala, 2nd November 2025 : In a strongly worded letter addressed to Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, the Tripura Pradesh Youth Congress (TPYC) has alleged that the Indian Railways network is being misused for large-scale transportation of narcotics and unpermitted cough syrups into Tripura.
The letter, signed by TPYC President Neel Kamal Saha, expresses deep concern over what the organization describes as a “statewide menace” that is pushing the youth of Tripura toward “destruction and decay.” The Congress youth wing claims that, instead of becoming a tool of development and connectivity, the railway system has “turned into a conduit for drug trafficking” with the alleged involvement of influential figures.
“It was a festive day when the whistle of the train blew in the capital city after sixty years of independence. We thought it would bring the dawn of development. Never did we imagine it would become a means of importing drugs and narcotics into the state,” the letter states.
Citing a recent incident at Jirania Railway Station on October 15, 2025, the Youth Congress alleges that two railway wagons — numbered 30030010892 and 31032457043 — were found carrying huge quantities of narcotics, including Fencidil cough syrup. Despite the seizure, the TPYC says no arrests have been made so far, alleging political protection for those involved.
The organization has accused certain “dishonest merchants, brokers, and ruling party leaders” of turning Tripura into a “corridor of drug peddling in South-East Asia.” It further claimed that police authorities are reluctant to act against the culprits due to political pressure.
The letter also raises questions about the role of the railway administration, alleging that such large-scale transportation of contraband would not be possible without internal complicity.
“The shocking and shameful thing is that your railway authority is also associated with this nexus, without whom it is impossible to use rail as a conveyance to carry drugs,” the letter reads, demanding a thorough investigation and exemplary punishment for those involved.
The Tripura Pradesh Youth Congress has urged the Union Railway Minister to initiate an immediate inquiry into the alleged nexus between drug smugglers and railway officials, and to take decisive steps to stop the misuse of the railways in the northeastern state.
No official response from the Railways Ministry or Tripura Police has been received at the time of reporting.
