Political tempers flare: Tinku rebuts Birajit’s foreign infiltration claims

Agartala, 8th November 2025: Kailashahar’s political landscape has erupted in controversy once again, this time over allegations of illegal immigration. A fiery exchange between Congress MLA Birajit Sinha and ruling party minister Tinku Roy has turned the town’s political climate into a battleground of accusations and counterclaims.

At a recent press conference held at the district Congress office, MLA Birajit Sinha made explosive allegations, claiming that illegal immigration from Bangladesh is taking place with the direct support of the ruling party. He cited the case of Sanjay Chakraborty from Sylhet, Bangladesh, who he alleges is now living in Srirampur village under the Chandipur assembly constituency as “Dipak Chakraborty.”

According to Sinha, the individual holds a Bangladeshi ID card, is a member of an international human rights organization based in Bangladesh and maintains an active bank account there. Yet, in India, he has allegedly acquired an Aadhaar card and a Residential Proof (ROR) under a new identity. Sinha further claimed that the man resides next to Minister Tinku Roy’s house and was even responsible for cooking during Durga Puja festivities at the minister’s residence suggesting tacit support from the ruling party.

“How did the Srirampur Panchayat issue ROR to a Bangladeshi national?” Sinha questioned, adding that the man’s father’s name was changed from Surath Chakraborty to Dilip Chakraborty. “This is a serious breach of national security,” he warned, stating that Congress has filed a written complaint with the Chief Minister and the Director General of Police. A local protest group is also reportedly preparing to file a case against the minister.

Minister Tinku Roy responded to the allegations from a party event, dismissing them as baseless and politically motivated. “Birajit Sinha is over 70 and holds press conferences every other day with new accusations. I’ve never responded before because lies don’t last,” Roy said.

He invited journalists to visit his home, which he described as open to all, and refuted claims that he had hired a Bangladeshi cook. “The boy in question was born and raised here. His father, Prahlad, is a local. He’s been cooking at my house since childhood,” Roy said. He added that the same individuals being accused today used to buy puffed rice from Sinha’s mother when she sold it in Kailashahar.

Roy accused the Congress of lacking principles and ethics, claiming they are now aligned with CPIM, a party he said once stained Kailashahar’s streets with blood. “This is their new political ideal,” he remarked.

While the central government has stated that Hindu refugees from Bangladesh arriving in India until 2025 will be granted shelter, Roy emphasized that he was not invoking that policy. “I’m simply saying the people being defamed are locals,” he said.

As Congress raises the alarm over “foreign infiltration” and the ruling party counters with accusations of “falsehood and moral bankruptcy,” Kailashahar finds itself at the heart of a political storm. Development has taken a backseat, with illegal immigration now dominating public discourse.
