Agartala, 13th November 2025:   An elderly man is battling for his life at Bishramganj Hospital after allegedly being attacked by his younger brother in a violent dispute over ancestral property. The incident took place around 10 pm yesterday in West Para, under the Barjala Gram Panchayat of Bishramganj police station.

Police sources informed that the 72-year-old Vidyasagar Debnath was assaulted inside his home by his younger brother, Bipul Debnath (55), who allegedly struck him on the head with a wooden plank. Severely injured and bleeding, Vidyasagar managed to escape and sought refuge at a neighbor’s house. He was later taken to Bishramganj police station by local resident Liton Debnath, who then rushed him to the hospital on police advice.

Speaking from his hospital bed, Vidyasagar claimed the attack was triggered by his recent written complaint to the Barjala Gram Panchayat. He alleged that Bipul had been enjoying the entirety of their late father’s property including shops and land without sharing any portion or providing financial support to their 95-year-old mother, Giribala Debnath.

“I am a poor farmer with no steady income. I had only asked him to help our mother with some money so she could survive in her old age,” Vidyasagar said.

He further stated that the matter had been brought to the attention of the SDM of Bishalgarh, who reportedly directed Bipul to pay Rs 2,000 monthly to their mother. However, Vidyasagar claimed that Bipul ignored the directive and continued withholding support.

Vidyasagar alleged that the assault was a retaliatory act following his formal appeal to the Panchayat. “He stormed into my house with his friends and tried to kill me. Had I not fled to my neighbor’s house, I wouldn’t be alive,” he said.

Despite the severity of the attack, local police have yet to arrest Bipul Debnath, who is reportedly a staunch supporter of the ruling party. The delay in action has raised concerns among residents about political influence and police inaction.

Vidyasagar remains in critical condition, fighting for survival.
