Agartala, 26th November 2025: The main entrance of Unakoti District Hospital has turned into a scene of filth and public outrage. Overflowing sewage from the hospital’s safety tank has been spilling onto the road, creating a foul stench and forcing patients, their families, and even pedestrians to wade through contaminated water to enter the hospital. With no proper drainage system in place, the dirty water has been stagnating right at the hospital gate, an alarming reflection of administrative negligence and the crumbling state of public health infrastructure.
Angered by the situation, local residents staged a protest on Wednesday, joined by Birajit Sinha, MLA of the 53-Kailashahar constituency, and district Congress president Mohammad Badruzzaman. Frustrated by years of complaints without resolution, the demonstrators gheraoed Public Works Department (PWD) Executive Engineer Joydeep Nath.
MLA Sinha lashed out at the administration, calling the lack of drainage and the flow of sewage across the hospital entrance “an insult to the people” and branding the negligence “unacceptable and shameful.”
Badruzzaman went further, making a sensational allegation. He claimed that a contractor, allegedly close to the ruling party and described as a “mafia leader,” had falsely told the media that ₹65 lakh had already been sanctioned for drainage and other development works outside the hospital. “This is a complete lie, spread deliberately to mislead the public,” Badruzzaman charged.
When asked, PWD Executive Engineer Joydeep Nath categorically denied any such sanction, stating that the department had received no approval or directive from higher authorities.
Congress leaders accused the contractor lobby of cheating the public under government protection. They warned that if the problem is not resolved immediately, a larger movement will be launched on the streets. The PWD, however, assured that officials would visit the site the same day to inspect the situation.
The crisis raises a stark question: when the entrance of a district’s main hospital is submerged in sewage, what does it say about the safety of citizens and the credibility of governance? Whether the authorities act swiftly or allow the problem to fester like the stagnant drain water remains to be seen.
