Agartala, 2nd December 2025 : Tripura’s Agriculture and Farmer’s Welfare Minister, Ratan Lal Nath, highlighted the critical role of self-reliance in agriculture to realize Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of making India a global grain store.
The Minister made these remarks today while distributing modern agricultural equipment, including tree saplings and spray machines, to farmers at the Mohanpur Agriculture Sub-Division.
“This initiative is crucial for modernizing agriculture, increasing production, and empowering farmers. With advanced equipment and quality resources, farmers can cultivate more efficiently, accelerating the state’s agricultural development,” the Minister said.
He emphasized the need for swift progress across all sectors, stating, “We must move forward with proper planning. Self-reliance is essential. If districts like North, Gomati, and Sepahijala stop producing rice, where will it come from? Under the Mohanpur Block, we must be self-sufficient. Our goal is to produce enough so that countries import food from India. Agriculture is the foundation, and achieving self-reliance is key to fulfilling PM Modi’s dream.”
Minister Nath also addressed misconceptions regarding onion cultivation in the state. “Scientists from the Agriculture College have proven that onion farming is possible here. We cultivate both red and white onions, and we are also focusing on potato cultivation. If we have rice, onions, potatoes, and pulses, no one should worry about food security. Tripura has the potential to be fully self-sufficient in food production,” he added.
Highlighting the state’s growing agricultural exports, the Minister noted, “India exports fish to the USA, China, Europe, and Japan, and eggs to Oman, Qatar, Sri Lanka, and the Maldives. We also export agricultural products to Bangladesh and Pakistan.”
This initiative reflects Tripura’s commitment to modernizing agriculture and strengthening the state’s position as a key contributor to India’s food security.
