Agartala, 19th December 2025: In a groundbreaking medical achievement, AGMC & GB Pant Hospital successfully saved the life of a 38-year-old man suffering from a massive pulmonary embolism—the first organized treatment of its kind in the state.
On December 5, 2025, around noon, the patient was rushed to GB Pant Hospital’s Emergency Medicine Department. He exhibited extreme coldness, severe shortness of breath, and repeatedly requested supplemental oxygen. Quick discussions with the patient’s family revealed no history of illness or harmful habits. Earlier that morning, the patient had briefly lost consciousness, after which his condition deteriorated rapidly.
The emergency team immediately initiated oxygen support and a rapid assessment. The patient was found to have dangerously low blood pressure and oxygen levels, along with signs of circulatory collapse. He was promptly admitted to the emergency ward, where critical interventions were started without delay.
Diagnostic testing confirmed a massive pulmonary embolism—an often fatal condition in which blood clots block the lungs’ arteries. Pulmonary embolism carries a mortality rate of 65–95%, with many patients dying before reaching hospital care.
The emergency medicine team, including Dr. Shirsendu Dhar, Dr. Ashis Debbarma, and Dr. Anup Laha, performed central venous catheterization and immediately administered thrombolytic therapy to dissolve the clots. Supportive medications were also provided to stabilize blood pressure. Notably, the clot-dissolving medication was supplied free of cost by the hospital. Remarkably, all critical interventions were initiated within 20 minutes of the patient’s arrival.
The patient’s condition gradually improved. Within six hours, his blood pressure stabilized, and his oxygen requirement decreased. A follow-up CT pulmonary angiography confirmed that while the main pulmonary artery was cleared, some clots persisted in smaller branches.
The Cardiology Department, led by Dr. Rakesh Das, Dr. Anindya Sundar Trivedi (HOD), Dr. Manna Bhattacharya, Dr. Arghya Pratim Nath, Dr. Anwesha Debnath, and Dr. Prantik Roy, then performed balloon pulmonary angioplasty and catheter-directed thrombolysis. These advanced procedures successfully removed the remaining clots, restoring nearly 100% blood flow through the pulmonary arteries and normal lung circulation.
On December 14, the patient was discharged walking and fully recovered. He and his family expressed heartfelt gratitude to the hospital authorities for the timely and comprehensive care that saved his life.
This life-saving success was made possible by the coordinated efforts of emergency physicians, cardiologists, nursing staff—including Meena Chand, Moni Das, Juli Das, Sukriti Debnath, and Beauty Das—and the cath-lab team. Their swift and meticulous work marks a historic milestone for pulmonary embolism management in the state.
