Agartala, 20th December 2025 : Doctors at GBP Hospital have successfully performed a critical open-heart surgery on a 22-year-old woman from South Tripura, giving her a new lease of life. The patient, Levita Tripura of the Manu area under Sabroom subdivision, had been admitted on September 5, 2025, after suffering a brain stroke that left her right side paralyzed.
Initially treated in the Female Medicine Department and later shifted to Neurology, the patient underwent physiotherapy and showed gradual improvement. However, within ten days, she developed acute breathing difficulty and chest pain. On December 9, she was referred to the Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery & Interventional Radiology (CTVS & IR) Department.
Under the supervision of CTVS expert Dr. Kanak Narayan Bhattacharya, a transesophageal echocardiogram and echocardiography revealed an embolized tumor in the left atrial myxoma measuring 33 mm x 19 mm, requiring urgent surgical intervention. Following all mandated diagnostic evaluations, Dr. Bhattacharya scheduled the operation for December 19.
The surgery was conducted successfully the same day, marking the second open-heart tumor removal performed at GBP Hospital—the first having taken place on March 20, 2023. The procedure was carried out entirely free of cost under the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (ABPMJAY). Authorities estimated that a similar operation in a private facility outside the state would cost nearly Rs 5 lakh.
The patient is currently under close monitoring in the ICU and is responding positively.
The multidisciplinary team included Cardiac Anesthesiologists Dr. Rimjhim Chakma and Dr. Manimoy Debbarma; Critical Care Specialist Dr. Surjit Pal; Cathlab Technicians Sanjay Ghosh and Arijit Pal; Cathlab Nurses Prankrishna Deb and Debabrata Debnath; Physician Assistant Sudipta Mondal; OT Assistants Ratan Mondal, Joydeep Chakraborty, and Abhijit Raj; Perfusionists Sujan Sahu and Saurabh Tripura; OT Nurses Mousumi Debnath, Annabahadur Jamatiya, Saurabh Shil, and Arpita Sarkar; and CTVS IU Coordinators Abhishek Dutt, Richashree Sarkar, and Jamson Debbarma.
The patient’s family expressed deep gratitude to the state government, the ABPMJAY scheme, and the entire medical team at GBP Hospital for providing advanced cardiac care at no cost.
