BY TC News Desk

Agartala, 31st December 2025:   Tripura is set to enhance real-time monitoring of cyclones, heavy rainfall, and extreme weather with a new state-of-the-art X-Band Doppler Weather Radar. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) and the Tripura government exchanged land lease documents for the radar’s installation, in a ceremony attended by Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha and IMD Director General Dr Mrutyunjay Mohapatra.

Three Automated Weather Stations (AWS) were also handed over to IMD to improve flood forecasting and water resource management. A second Doppler Weather Radar will be installed at Belonia, expected to be operational within three months.

Tripura, prone to urban flooding, landslides, cyclones, nor’westers, cold waves, and heatwaves, currently has 34 rain gauges and 28 AWS, with 14 more planned. IMD aims to provide Panchayat-level forecasting for precise, actionable weather information, benefiting farmers.

The new X-Band radar, covering around 100 km, will enable real-time tracking of heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and cyclones, complementing the existing Doppler radar at Agartala Airport, operational since 2011. The installation is scheduled ahead of the pre-monsoon season.
