Agartala, 8th January 2026: In a bid to reduce the burden of electricity bills and promote renewable energy, the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana was formally launched at Santirbazar today. The inauguration ceremony took place at Ganapati Solar Agency, opposite the old Block office with Santirbazar MLA Pramod Reang leading the event.
The central government’s flagship scheme aims to make households self-reliant in power generation by installing rooftop solar panels or on-grid solar plants. Speaking at the launch, MLA Reang highlighted that the initiative would not only contribute to environmental protection but also enable families to save up to 300 units of electricity per month while creating opportunities for additional income.
Officials at the event outlined the subsidy benefits available under the scheme: Rs 33,000 subsidy for a 1 kW solar plant; Rs 66,000 subsidy for up to 2 kW capacity; Up to Rs 85,800 subsidy for 3 kW or higher capacity plants; and For residential welfare associations, a subsidy of ₹18,900 per kW.
It was further announced that beneficiaries would not need to worry about heavy upfront investments, as banks will provide easy loan facilities with flexible installments.
The launch event was attended by Swapna Baidya, social worker Debasish Bhowmik, Ganapati Agency owner Sajal Shil, and several other dignitaries. Residents of Shantirbazar subdivision expressed happiness at the availability of such a scheme, which they believe will bring tangible benefits to their daily lives.
