Agartala, 11th January 2026: Tensions continue to simmer in Shimultali under Fatikroy police station after a wave of violence and arson left minority families devastated. This morning, Congress Legislative Party leader and MLA Birajit Sinha, along with Unakoti District Congress president Md. Badruzzaman, attempted to visit the affected area to meet victims. However, they were allegedly stopped by police, sparking sharp criticism from the party.
According to Congress leaders, the police prevented them from interacting with displaced families and inspecting the situation on the ground. “If speaking to victims of violence is considered a crime, then democracy no longer exists in this state,” said Birajit Sinha, condemning the administration’s actions as a violation of democratic rights. He questioned whose interests were being served by “hiding the truth.”
Md. Badruzzaman also expressed outrage, stating, “Minority families are living in fear and insecurity. Yet, when we try to stand by them, we are obstructed. This is not just unfortunate—it is a dangerous signal.”
The violence, which erupted on Saturday, saw several homes, shops, and vehicles belonging to minority residents set ablaze and vandalized. Panic forced many families to flee, and those who remain continue to live under a cloud of fear. Despite heavy police deployment, locals say trust in the administration has not been restored.
The incident has triggered strong political reactions, with questions raised over why elected representatives are being barred from entering violence-hit areas. Critics allege that the voices of victims are being deliberately silenced. As Shimultali remains tense under strict police watch, doubts over administrative neutrality and accountability have deepened.
Shimultali today bears not only the scars of violence but also the weight of a democracy under scrutiny.
