Agartala, 13th January 2026:  Tension gripped Purathal Panchayat under Bishalgarh subdivision after border smugglers allegedly assaulted local leaders and issued death threats over their role in curbing illegal trafficking activities.

It is reported that, smugglers involved in Rohingya trafficking, cattle smuggling, and the trade of contraband substances including cannabis, Phensedyl, and yaba tablets blamed the Panchayat leadership for disrupting their operations. On Monday night, while returning home from the market, Purathal Panchayat’s head and the booth president of 16/1 Bishalgarh were attacked by Shuklal Majumder, his son Abhishek Majumder, and associate Prasenjit Debbarma. Armed with sticks and iron rods, the assailants allegedly attempted to kill them.

The Panchayat head’s husband, Mithun Das, and booth president Jibanchandra Dutta narrowly escaped with their lives. Later, the victims received threatening phone calls at home, prompting them to inform Madhupur Police Station.

The situation escalated further on Tuesday morning when Shuklal Majumder reportedly confronted the leaders again while they were discussing the incident. He allegedly pushed Mithun Das to the ground and assaulted him. Following the repeated attacks, Mithun Das and Jibanchandra Dutta lodged a formal complaint at Madhupur Police Station.

Local residents expressed concern over the growing influence of border smugglers in the area, which has left the Purathal Panchayat community in distress. The public now awaits to see what legal action Madhupur police will take against the accused smugglers.
