Agartala, 17th November 2026: Despite seven long years, the construction of a building at Maharani Gamaría School, launched in 2018, remains unfinished in 2025. The stalled project has sparked growing anger and questions among local residents.
School Inspector Alokananda Jamatia stated that the work began before her tenure. According to information she later gathered, the project was sanctioned with an allocation of nearly Rs 35 lakh. Initially, the responsibility lay with departmental officer Prasenjit Roy. However, midway through construction, technical complications arose, and Roy was transferred to Amarpur. His successor, Paheli Das, reportedly never formally assumed charge of the project. Soon after, Das left her temporary post for a permanent government position elsewhere, leaving the Udaipur School Inspector’s office without a responsible officer for an extended period.
Currently, District Education Office official Faruk is overseeing the matter, though he declined to provide specific details to the media. Local sources confirm that while construction began in 2018, it was abruptly halted and has seen no progress since. The partially built structure, with walls and a roof, now lies abandoned. Cracks have appeared across the flooring, raising serious concerns about construction quality.
Efforts to trace official documentation from Prosanjit Roy, now serving in Amarpur, have failed. Preliminary inquiries suggest the work was executed directly through local party leaders and contractors, who supplied labor and materials. This has intensified speculation about irregularities.
Questions also surround former Matabari MLA Biplab Kumar Ghosh, who allegedly pushed to expand a modest tin-roofed classroom into a large building. The budget was later increased, with nearly Rs 35 lakh spent on the project. Today, Ghosh is no longer an MLA, the implementing officer has been transferred, the then-headmaster replaced, and the Udaipur school inspector reassigned. What remains is an incomplete, deteriorating building, a silent reminder of wasted public funds.
Some sources claim the expenditure may have exceeded Rs 50 lakh. Locals argue that the sudden transfer of the implementing officer during such a major project raises suspicions. They believe only a full investigation from the outset could uncover the truth behind why the construction was abandoned and whether deeper motives were at play.
