House gutted in midnight blaze; Locals slam NEEPCO for inaction

Agartala, 19th January 2026:  A devastating fire reduced a residential house to ashes in the early hours of Monday, triggering outrage among locals over the alleged inaction of a nearby fire service unit.

The incident took place around 3 am at the residence of Suleman Mia in Ballerdhepa, Sonamura. Locals informed that the fire spread rapidly, engulfing the entire house within minutes. All household belongings, including furniture and daily essentials, were completely destroyed.

What has sparked widespread anger is the claim that a fire engine stationed just a few meters away at the NEEPCO project office was not dispatched to the scene, despite repeated calls for help. Locals allege that officials cited various excuses and failed to respond in time, allowing the fire to rage unchecked.

“The fire station was barely a minute away. Had they acted promptly, at least part of the house could have been saved,” said a visibly distressed neighbor. Residents have condemned what they describe as NEEPCO’s “inhuman negligence,” demanding accountability for the loss.

An investigation into the matter is being demanded by the affected family and local residents.
