Agartala, 28th January 2026:   Emphasizing the strategic importance of India’s northeast in the nation’s development journey, President Droupadi Murmu lauded Tripura’s remarkable progress during her address to the joint session of Parliament at the opening of the Budget session on Wednesday.

The President highlighted Agartala’s enhanced connectivity to India’s mainland through the expanded broad-gauge railway network, noting that this infrastructure boost has accelerated development, opened new avenues for tourism, and generated employment opportunities.

President Murmu also praised the state’s strides in healthcare, particularly the establishment of a dedicated hospital for women and children in Agartala. She emphasized that this facility will significantly improve healthcare services for the state’s population, especially benefiting women and children, elevating Tripura’s medical infrastructure to new heights.

Reflecting on the broader region, the President underscored that over Rs 80,000 crore has been invested in northeastern rail infrastructure over the past 11 years. Capitals like Agartala, Aizawl, and Itanagar are now connected via broad-gauge lines, fostering economic growth, tourism, and employment across the northeast.

On healthcare, she described the past decade as transformative for the region, citing the establishment of medical colleges in Sikkim’s Sech and the new women and children hospital in Agartala. Together, these developments are creating a robust and integrated healthcare network across the northeast.

“Tripura is emerging as a key partner in India’s vision of a developed nation,” President Murmu said, highlighting the pivotal role of connectivity, infrastructure, and healthcare services in propelling the state forward.

She also reflected on post-independence development trends, noting that growth had long been concentrated in select cities and regions, leaving many areas underserved. Today, she observed, such disparities are narrowing, and the northeast is increasingly becoming central to India’s overall growth story.
