Agartala, 28th January 2026: Tripura’s silk industry, long celebrated across India for its craftsmanship and heritage, is facing renewed unrest as a large section of workers allege they have been denied fair wages for years. Today, reelers and twisters employed in the sector staged a fresh protest, submitting a deputation to the Director of Handloom, Handicrafts and Sericulture demanding just pay and dearness allowance.
According to the Tripura Silk Industry Reelers and Twisters Workers’ Association, despite the high skill and labor required in silk production, the current wage structure remains grossly inadequate for sustaining livelihoods. The association stated that repeated appeals to the administration have failed to yield a permanent solution, forcing workers to take to the streets once again.
Union representatives further highlighted that while the silk industry is one of Tripura’s most traditional and promising sectors, neglect by policymakers has left its workforce in financial distress. “We contribute to an industry that brings pride to the state, yet our families struggle to survive,” one worker said during the deputation.
The workers’ charter of demands includes: Introduction of modern, scientific technology to preserve and strengthen the silk industry; Repair and revival of defunct machinery; and Equal pay for equal work across the sector.
They warned that without immediate intervention, Tripura’s historic silk industry could face a serious crisis in the near future.
