Tripura LoP Calls Budget a Reflection of India’s Economic Decline

Agartala, 1st February 2026:   The Opposition CPIM has strongly criticised the Union Budget 2026–27 presented in Parliament today describing it as anti-people and a letdown, especially for the poorer and working-class sections.

Tripura’s Leader of Opposition and CPI(M) state committee secretary, Jitendra Chaudhury, said the budget fails to provide any meaningful relief to ordinary citizens and workers, reflecting what he described as a deteriorating economic situation in the country.

Speaking to reporters, Chaudhury remarked that while the government often makes “attractive announcements” in its annual budget, the past 10–11 years have repeatedly ended in public disappointment. He added, “This year’s budget again highlights how the Indian economy is gradually collapsing.”

The CPI(M) leader also criticized the government for cutting allocations to essential sectors like education and healthcare due to poor revenue generation. He pointed out that although various schemes had been introduced in earlier budgets, there has been no increase in allocations for vital subsidies, such as those for fertilizers.

Chaudhury further alleged that the central government continues to favour corporations by offering them tax relief while imposing a heavier tax burden on ordinary citizens to cope with the fiscal deficit. “Since coming to power, this government has consistently reduced taxes for corporates, while ordinary people face higher taxes,” he said.

Labeling the budget as “anti-people,” Chaudhury warned that these policies could have long-term negative effects on India’s economic health.
