Agartala, 4th February 2026 :   Agartala Municipal Corporation has initiated a large-scale eviction drive to remove illegal encroachments across the city. The operation began early yesterday morning, starting from Battala and continuing up to the Post Office area, targeting unauthorized roadside shops and makeshift structures built on footpaths.

Officials stated that the drive aims to free public spaces from unlawful occupation and ensure smoother traffic flow. The corporation has confirmed that such operations will continue in phases to keep the city clean and congestion-free.

Mayor of Agartala emphasized that multiple measures are being taken to transform the city into a modern and well-organized urban space. He noted that repeated complaints had been received regarding traffic jams and public inconvenience caused by illegal businesses, footpath encroachments, indiscriminate parking of vehicles, and roadside vending. “Only those with valid licenses will be allowed to operate. Eviction drives will be carried out as required in key areas,” the Mayor said, stressing that the campaign will be sustained over time.

However, the operation has left many small traders in distress. Several families who depended on roadside businesses for their livelihood were displaced, with some breaking down in tears during the eviction. The scenes created an emotional atmosphere in the affected areas, highlighting the human cost of the crackdown.

The operation stemmed from a decision taken during a meeting convened at the AMC conference hall last week. The session was presided over by Agartala Mayor and MLA Dipak Majumder, with participation from AMC corporators, Municipal Commissioner Saju Vaheed A, and representatives of the Traffic Department, Task Force, Public Works Department, and Agartala Smart City authorities.
