TW Minister Bikash Debbarma pushes handloom, sericulture drive to empower women

Agartala, 6th  February 2026 :   The Directorate of Tribal Welfare convened a high-level review meeting today at the Secretary’s Office in Gorkhabasti, focusing on strengthening handloom and sericulture as engines of women’s empowerment and sustainable livelihood.

Chaired by Tribal Welfare Minister Bikash Debbarma, the session brought together senior officials to chart strategies for enhancing production, expanding markets, and integrating traditional crafts with modern management practices. Special attention was given to training women from rural and tribal areas, alongside financial support measures aimed at boosting self-reliance.

Minister Debbarma told reporters, “A well-planned programme has been adopted to make women self-reliant through handloom and sericulture. This meeting reviewed the implementation process and future roadmap. Once realized, the initiative will empower women economically and revitalize the state’s traditional industries.”

The Minister also held detailed discussions with District and Sub-Divisional Tribal Welfare Officers to assess grassroots progress, fund utilization, and the status of ongoing schemes. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to holistic tribal development, stressing stronger coordination, transparency, and monitoring to ensure welfare benefits reach intended communities effectively.
