Agartala, 16th February 2026:  A 21-year-old youth lost his life in a tragic road accident on Sunday night while returning home with friends after buying a cake for his birthday. The incident took place near Beltali cremation ground under Madhupur police station.

According to police and local sources, the victim, identified as Pradip Das alias Shipon, son of Nitai Das of Rajartilla in Debipur, was driving a Maruti van (registration number TR01BB0481) at high speed around 10 p.m. The vehicle, carrying five of his friends, lost control while negotiating a turn and crashed into a roadside pillar. The impact broke the pillar and a barricade post before the van rammed into a tree, leaving the vehicle mangled.

Pradip Das suffered severe bleeding from his nose, mouth, and ears and died instantly. His five friends sustained injuries, one of them critically with both legs fractured. Locals rushed to the spot after hearing the loud crash and informed Madhupur police. Rescue efforts were difficult as the victim was trapped inside the wreckage, and police, with the help of residents, had to cut open the vehicle to retrieve his body. He was later sent to Hapania hospital, where he was declared dead and placed in the morgue.

The injured were initially taken to TMC & Dr BR Ambedkar Teaching hospital, Hapania and later referred to GBP Hospital. The victims have been identified as Anik Das (son of Uttam Das, Debipur Rajartilla), Dipankar Das (son of Kajal Das, Durga Nagar, Bishalgarh), Vishal Das (son of Swapan Das, Manikyanagar under Kalamchoura police station), Ranbir Das (son of Prantosh Das, Manikyanagar), and Shubhadip Das (son of Bapan Das, Debipur Rajartilla).

Police suspect overspeeding as the primary cause of the accident. The incident has cast a pall of grief over the locality, with residents mourning the untimely death of the young man whose birthday celebration ended in tragedy. Family members are struggling to come to terms with the loss.
