Agartala, 17th February 2026: The Tripura Human Rights Commission (THRC) has directed the Inspector General (IG) of Prisons to submit a detailed report following allegations of delay and negligence in providing medical treatment to a convict.
The order was issued by Justice Arindam Lodh, Chairperson of the Commission, after receiving a complaint from Pranab Sarkar of Narsingarh in South Bogadi, West Tripura. The complaint concerns his father, Surendra Sarkar (58), who is currently incarcerated at Bishalgarh Kendriya Sansudhanagar in connection with a Special POCSO case from 2019.
According to the complaint, Surendra Sarkar was referred for surgery to SSKM Hospital, Kolkata, on October 21, 2024, by AGMC & GBP Hospital, to address bilateral ACL tears. However, the complainant alleged that the Prisons Department had not taken the required steps to ensure that his father received the surgery.
The complaint also raised concerns over alleged negligence by the IG of Prisons. A copy of the referral slip was submitted with the complaint. The Commission noted a discrepancy in the case number mentioned in the petition but decided to seek a factual report before taking further action.
The IG of Prisons has been asked to provide a detailed response within 15 days. The THRC has scheduled the matter for further consideration on March 9, 2026.
