Agartala, 17th February 2026: In a significant move to combat child marriage, the Tripura State Commission for Protection of Child Rights has rolled out a comprehensive awareness campaign across West Tripura district.
To reach every corner of the district, special promotional vehicles have been mobilized to visit villages, marketplaces, and other public spaces, spreading critical messages about the dangers of child marriage. The campaign sets an ambitious target: reducing child marriages in Tripura to under 5% by 2029.
The official launch was held at the Commission’s office grounds at Melar Math, where Commission Chairperson Jayanti Debbarma flagged off three awareness vehicles. On the first day, the vehicles will cover Mohanpur, Bamutia, and Dukli blocks, eventually reaching all nine blocks across the three sub-divisions of West Tripura.
As part of the drive, campaign teams will distribute educational leaflets and other materials to inform communities about the negative consequences of child marriage, the legal framework protecting children, and their rights. Debbarma underscored that the law mandates a minimum marriage age of 18 for girls and 21 for boys, and violations carry legal consequences.
The campaign, which started on November 29, 2025, will run until International Women’s Day on March 8, 2026. Starting February 23, the initiative will expand to include street plays in tea gardens and busy public areas to encourage active community engagement.
Chairperson Debbarma noted that the initiative’s success relies heavily on public involvement, urging citizens to take an active role in safeguarding children’s rights.
