Agartala, 19th February 2026:  Union Home Minister Amit Shah will inaugurate the Joint Regional Official Language Conference for the Eastern, Northeastern, and Northern regions at the Indoor Exhibition Hall of Hapania International Fair Ground on Friday. The event is expected to draw participation from over 3,000 officials and representatives.

Addressing a press conference at ‘Sonar Tori’ State Guest House in Agartala city on Thursday afternoon, Anshuli Arya, Secretary of the Department of Official Language, Ministry of Home Affairs emphasized that the conference seeks to strengthen the implementation of the Official Language Policy and promote the progressive use of Hindi in government functioning.

“According to the Constitution, Hindi in Devanagari script is the official language of the Union. Since its establishment in 1975, the Department has worked to ensure effective implementation of these provisions,” Arya told reporters.

She noted that four regional conferences are organized annually, with this being the second joint conference of the 2025–26 financial year. Such gatherings, she said, foster exchange of experiences and best practices among language officers across regions.

The conference will bring together representatives from West Bengal, Odisha, Bihar, Jharkhand, Assam, Tripura, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, and northern states, alongside senior officials from central government offices, banks, and public undertakings.

Scheduled for February 20 at 2 p.m., the inaugural session will also feature the presentation of 80 awards, including the prestigious Narakas Rajbhasha Samman, to institutions excelling in official language implementation. In addition, the North-East Special Issue of Rajbhasha Bharati and two new publications—Indian Languages and the Official Language Hindi – Timeless Works and Amritvani – Timeless Inspiring Verses of Sanskrit—will be released.

Highlighting innovation, Arya introduced Bharati – Multilingual Translation Charioteer, developed in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision to bridge linguistic gaps among Indian languages listed in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution. Exhibition stalls by banks and literary institutions will also be set up at the venue, while a special yoga session for officers was held Thursday evening to promote wellness.

Arya highlighted the cultural significance of Hindi and other Indian languages: “Hindi, Sanskrit, and the literature of all Indian languages are invaluable symbols of our heritage. Our collective objective is to advance with an inclusive and coordinated cultural vision.”

MHA’s DoOL Joint Secretary Nidhi Pandey, Dr. Pradeep Kumar Chakraborty, Secretary of the ICA Department, Government of Tripura and other senior officials were present at the press conference.
