Agartala, 21st   February 2026 :   The previous government never worked for the farmers, but under the present government, farmers are witnessing benefits. The present government is working to double the income of farmers, as agriculture is the foundation of the economy.

This was informed by Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister Ratan Lal Nath today after inaugurating the newly constructed agri-produce market building at Bisramganj in Sepahijala district.

The minister informed that in the last seven years, the present state government has built 23 markets in Sepahijala district alone, spending Rs 57 crore. Before our government, in their seven years, only six markets were built and Rs 4 crore was spent.

He said that in Bishalgarh sub-division, Rs 35 crore has been spent on 15 markets.“The most important matter is to make the state self-reliant, and both the state and central governments are working towards that. Prime Minister Narendra Modi wants a self-reliant India, and we want a self-reliant Tripura. To make this successful, we have to give importance to agriculture,” said the minister.

The minister said that not only production but also proper markets are necessary for selling produce; therefore, the development of markets is essential.

“We are working to double the income of farmers. I went to Germany with a farmer, Laxman Reang of Jampuijala, with Kalikhasa, Basmati, bird’s eye chilli, ginger, turmeric — all organic products. We set up a stall there. We must be self-reliant. Earlier, India had to wait for rice from the USA, whereas now India is producing the highest quantity of paddy. PM Modi said that he wants to make India a storage hub of grains. Agriculture is the backbone of our economy. If farmers do not cultivate, what will other people do? That is why we must give due respect to farmers. This year, food grain cultivation has increased by 12%. There was a time when farmers never witnessed benefits. We have human resources which no country has,” he said.

During the event, MLA Sushanta Deb, Sabhadhipati Supriya Das Dutta, and others were present.
