Agartala, 2nd March 2026: Students belonging to the Other Backward Classes (OBC) have threatened to launch a larger protes over the non-disbursement of post-matric scholarships for the 2024–25 financial year. Alleging prolonged delays, aggrieved students gheraoed the Director of the OBC Welfare Department and submitted a deputation demanding immediate release of their pending stipends.
According to the protesting students, many OBC and tribal students have not yet received their post-matric scholarships for the current financial year. They claimed that the delay in fund disbursement by the department has left a large number of economically weaker students in severe distress, as many depend entirely on the scholarship to continue their education.
Speaking to the media after submitting the deputation, a student representative said that despite earlier appeals and a previous deputation to the OBC Welfare Department, no concrete action has been taken so far. “Students from financially weak families rely completely on this scholarship to pursue their studies. The continued delay has made our future uncertain,” he said. He further warned that if the pending scholarships are not released immediately, the organization would be compelled to launch a larger protest, including a sit-in demonstration.
On the other hand, the Director of the OBC Welfare Department held discussions with the agitating students and assured them that steps would be taken once funds are received. The official stated that the delay in scholarship disbursement is due to the non-release of allocated funds from the central government. He added that the department would expedite the distribution process as soon as the funds are made available.
The situation remains tense as students await a resolution, with many indicating that further agitation is imminent if their demands are not met promptly.
