Agartala, 11th March 2026:   The historic Battala Crematorium is set for a major modernization, with plans to improve facilities, aesthetics, and emergency preparedness. The initiative was reviewed on Wednesday during a site visit by Mayor Dipak Mazumdar.

He said that a new furnace is being constructed along the roadside to facilitate emergency use, particularly during the monsoon season when the crematorium often gets waterlogged from the nearby howrah river. The initiative aims to ease difficulties faced by people bringing bodies for cremation during the rainy season.

“Alongside the emergency furnace, beautification work has already begun. Plans include the installation of a fountain, high-mast lighting, and seating arrangements for visitors. The historic Shiva temple within the crematorium complex will also be elevated and renovated with modern facilities” he  said.

Mayor said we have undertaken various projects to modernize battala Crematorium. The new furnace will help address challenges during the monsoon season, while the overall upgrades will enhance the facility’s aesthetics and functionality. The project is estimated to cost around Rs 8.5 crore. The new furnace will be ready before this year’s monsoon, and all other works are expected to be completed within six months.”

The site visit was attended by Corporator Jahnabi Das Dutta and officials from the Howrah Municipal Corporation.
