Agartala, 14th March 2026: A newly constructed drainage system in the New Market area of Amarpur constituency collapsed yesterday evening after just half an hour of rainfall, raising serious questions about the quality of construction and possible corruption in the project.
The covered drain, built only eight months ago by the Public Works Department to channel rainwater from the busy marketplace, had shown no visible issues during the dry months. However, the sudden downpour exposed its fragility as nearly 50–60 meters of the structure caved in opposite New Market police station.
Local traders complained that the collapse has disrupted business, with broken sections of the drain blocking shopfronts and causing inconvenience. Residents also voiced concern over the poor quality of work, alleging misuse of funds and negligence in construction standards.
The incident has sparked public anger, with demands for accountability from the authorities and immediate repair of the damaged drainage system.
