Agartala, 17th  March 2026:   Residents of the SC Colony under Bejimara Gram Panchayat have been grappling with an acute drinking water crisis for the past three years. Despite repeated complaints to the local panchayat and concerned departments, no permanent solution has been provided, leading to mounting frustration among villagers.

This morning around 10 am, locals staged a protest by blocking the Sonamura–Kathalia road at Bejimara Chumuhani. The blockade continued for nearly an hour, causing massive traffic congestion on both sides of the road and leaving commuters and pedestrians in severe distress.

Villagers alleged that although the central government’s “Har Ghar Jal” scheme had promised household water connections, the supply points have remained defunct for a long time. As a result, residents are forced to fetch water from ponds for drinking and daily needs, raising serious health concerns.

Protesters further complained that no officials from the concerned department visited the site during the demonstration, which fueled their anger. They demanded immediate restoration of regular drinking water supply and urgent repair of the broken water pump.

The villagers warned that if their demands are not met promptly, they will launch a larger agitation in the coming days.
