Agartala, 23rd March 2026:   The Tripura Legislative Assembly witnessed significant discussions this week on two pressing issues: the policies governing the Tripura State Rifles (TSR) and the alarming statistics of road accidents in the state.

In response to questions raised by Sudip Roy Barman, MLA, the Home Department clarified that there is no written provision under TSR Recruitment Rules for the promotion of enrolled personnel to the rank of Rifleman. The Minister further stated that while reimbursements from TSR expenditures have been deposited into the state treasury, amounting to Rs. 6.31 crore in 2023–24, Rs. 6.39 crore in 2024–25, and Rs. 6.36 crore in 2025–26, no decision has yet been taken to provide TSR personnel with pay parity and benefits equivalent to central paramilitary forces.

Separately, a joint query raised by five MLAs Nirmal Biswas, Sudip Roy Barman, Nayan Sarkar, Shyamal Chakraborty, and Birajit Sinha brought attention to the rising number of road accidents in Tripura. The Home Department reported that in the past three years, the state recorded 1,682 road accidents, resulting in 643 deaths and 1,637 injuries. Year-wise data revealed 577 accidents in 2023 with 261 fatalities, 577 accidents in 2024 with 265 fatalities, and 528 accidents in 2025 with 117 fatalities.

The figures highlight both the financial and administrative challenges faced by the state — from ensuring fair treatment of its security forces to addressing public safety on the roads. Legislators emphasized the need for stronger policy frameworks and preventive measures to safeguard both the personnel serving the state and its citizens.
