Agartala, 26th March 2026:   CPI(M) today alleged that subsidy funds under the Prime Minister’s Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP) were being prepared for transfer to beneficiaries in poll-bound areas of Tripura and urged the election authorities to intervene immediately.

In a letter addressed to the Chief Electoral Officer of Tripura, the State Election Commission, and the Chief Election Commissioner of India, CPI(M) Tripura state secretary Jitendra Chaudhury claimed that large-scale transfers of subsidy money were reportedly underway in the bye-election-bound 56-Dharmanagar Assembly Constituency and areas under the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council.

According to the complaint, the Khadi and Village Industries Commission, through its Tripura office, has been implementing PMEGP in the state in coordination with the Industries and Commerce Department and the Tripura Khadi Board. The scheme, administered by the Ministry of MSME, provides credit-linked subsidies for setting up micro-enterprises in the non-farm sector.

The CPI(M) alleged that after the announcement of elections, PMEGP loans had been approved for a large number of beneficiaries, mainly in Dharmanagar and ADC areas, and subsidy amounts ranging from Rs 2.5 lakh to Rs 5 lakh were likely to be transferred directly into beneficiaries’ bank accounts from the KVIC central office in Mumbai.

The party stated that if such transfers take place during the election period, it could amount to a violation of the Model Code of Conduct, particularly provisions restricting sanction of grants or payments once elections are announced.

CPI(M) urged the election authorities to investigate the matter immediately and halt any such transfers if the allegations are found to be true, in the interest of ensuring a fair electoral process.
