Agartala, 7th April 2026: Bishalgarh witnessed a symbolic revival today as the Congress party office at the Lower Market area was reopened after lying abandoned for eight years. The reopening coincided with the 43rd death anniversary of former Congress MLA Parimal Saha, who was brutally killed on April 7, 1983, along with party worker Jitendra Saha, allegedly by CPI(M) cadres.
The office, which had been gutted in an arson attack on March 3, 2018, remained derelict for years, turning into a den for miscreants. Under the leadership of Pradesh Congress Committee member and lawyer Nigamananda Goswami, party workers repaired and restored the building, marking what leaders described as a major organizational success.
The day’s program began with floral tributes at Parimal Saha’s portrait in front of the office, followed by homage at his burial site. Among those present were District Congress General Secretary Arafat Iqbal, Youth Congress Legal Cell co-incharge Ershad Mia, local leader Shanti Bhattacharya, and several other workers.
Speaking to the media, Goswami recalled Saha as one of the most popular legislators of his time, describing him as a respected guardian of undivided Bishalgarh. “His ideology and sacrifice continue to inspire us. Today, as we reopen this office, we pledge to carry forward his vision,” he said.
The reopening also carries historical resonance. Former state Congress president Piyush Biswas had once faced violent attacks while attempting to reclaim the office, narrowly escaping with the help of his security guards. Since then, no serious effort was made to restore the premises until now.
Congress leaders confirmed that all future party programs in Bishalgarh will be conducted from the restored office, signaling a renewed organizational presence in the region.
