Agartala, 9th April 2026: The Pradesh Congress has taken to the streets to mobilize public resistance against what it calls a “disgraceful conspiracy” to undermine the TTAADC elections, targeting the State Election Commission. On Thursday, the party organized a rally and submitted a memorandum to the commission, expressing strong protest. The delegation was led by Pradesh Congress spokesperson Prabir Chakraborty.
Chakraborty alleged that the state government is increasingly disconnected from the people and is riddled with internal distrust, with ministers acting against each other. He said, “Amid this political chaos, the by-election in Dharmanagar is taking place. It is particularly concerning that the Election Commission has become a ‘puppet’ of Modi-Shah. The EVM machines brought from Madhya Pradesh include two ‘chief’ units, which are only needed for conducting two simultaneous elections. Why have such machines been brought here? Moreover, 1,350 EVMs have been brought for just 1,200 booths, raising serious doubts.”
The Congress also cited statements from a ruling party minister suggesting that votes cast for other parties would allegedly be credited to the Bharatiya Janata Party, further fueling suspicion. “Given that election officials and BJP offices seem to be coordinating on a single line, the Congress has serious concerns,” Chakraborty added.
After submitting the memorandum, the delegation met with the State Election Commission secretary to present their demands. They raised objections that the machines lacked VVPAT (Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail) units, claiming that the EVMs could be used to manipulate votes. They demanded that VVPAT-enabled EVMs already present in the state be used instead, along with the installation of CCTV cameras at every polling station.
However, the State Election Commission secretary clarified to the Congress leaders that all EVMs are tested in the presence of representatives from all political parties, and that commissioning is being carried out under full scrutiny. He emphasized that there is no possibility of vote manipulation with the machines currently in use.
