Agartala, 10th April 2026: The local market committee caught six drug peddlers near the Lake Chowmuhani Bazaar bridge area. The accused were later handed over to the police. Police officials stated that, the arrests were made from areas under and around the bridge, which had reportedly become a centre for illegal drug activities.
Speaking to media personnel here, committee convenor Shyamal Saha said that drug dealers had been operating in the area for the last 4 to 5 years, creating serious concerns for local residents. He also highlighted that school-going children were often seen visiting these places, which made the situation more alarming. During the raid, the accused reportedly tried to destroy evidence by throwing drug containers into the nearby river upon seeing the committee members approaching.
Citing lack of timely action earlier, Shyamal Saha said that the current market committee decided to take the initiative themselves and conducted the raid, successfully catching six people. He further added that while six drug peddlers were arrested, many others managed to escape from the spot and could not be caught. He also made it clear that the committee is committed to making the market area completely drug-free and announced that such anti-drug drives will now be carried out regularly.
The market committee recently held discussions with the Officer-in-Charge of West Agartala Police Station, who assured full cooperation and support in tackling such illegal activities. Shyamal Saha further mentioned that local women working nearby, especially those involved in crushing bricks, have witnessed frequent drug transactions in the area and can provide further information. Local residents and workers have supported the initiative, stating that such steps are necessary to ensure a safe and healthy environment for everyone.
