Tripura High Court seeks state’s response on Anganwadi workers’ regularisation

Date:

Agartala, 23rd April 2026:  The Tripura High Court has issued a show-cause notice to the state government, demanding clarification on why long-serving Anganwadi workers and helpers have not been granted regularisation in their jobs. The court directed the government to present its position within a stipulated timeframe.

During the hearing, the bench questioned why employees who have been working for years should continue without permanent appointments or service benefits. Speaking to reporters, petitioner’s counsel Purushottam Roy Barman said Anganwadi workers and helpers have been deprived of regular employment benefits despite years of service, prompting them to file a writ petition to secure their rightful entitlements.

The petitioners argued that until regularisation is granted, the principle of “equal pay for equal work” must be implemented. They stressed that the case was filed to ensure fair treatment and access to benefits comparable to other government employees.

Roy Barman further noted that the High Court had previously ruled in favor of granting gratuity to Anganwadi staff, a decision upheld by the division bench even after the state government appealed. Despite these rulings, workers’ demands remain unmet. He also alleged that since 2017, Anganwadi workers and helpers have been denied dearness allowance, unlike other government employees, leaving them excluded from financial increments they had received earlier.

The case has once again spotlighted the long-standing grievances of Anganwadi staff in Tripura, raising questions about labor rights, welfare measures, and the state’s commitment to frontline childcare workers.
