CITU holds protest, gives deputation against hawker evictions

Date:

Agartala, 15th June 2026:  Responding to a nationwide call by the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), a mass deputation and protest demonstration were held at Dharmanagar Railway Station on Monday against the eviction of hawkers and small traders from railway premises.

The protest is part of a larger countrywide movement opposing alleged inhumane evictions, police excesses, and arbitrary arrests of hawkers in several railway station areas, including Sealdah, Dum Dum, and Jadavpur in West Bengal.

According to Amitabh Dutta, Vice-President of the CITU Tripura State Committee and a member of its All-India Working Committee, the ongoing eviction drives are being carried out without any proper rehabilitation measures, severely affecting the livelihoods of small traders. He termed the actions “inhumane” and said the movement aims to safeguard the fundamental right to life and livelihood of the affected people.

As part of the programme, a procession was taken out from the CITU Dharmanagar Sub-divisional office, which passed through key routes before reaching the railway station premises. There, a delegation of CITU members submitted a deputation to the Station Manager, highlighting their demands.

Leaders present at the demonstration called for intensifying the agitation in the coming days and urged authorities to immediately halt eviction drives and ensure proper rehabilitation of hawkers operating in and around railway stations.
