Legal Win for Tipra Motha: SC Orders Overdue Village Committee Polls in Tripura

Date:

Agartala, 16th June 2026:  The Supreme Court has directed that elections for Village Committees under the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) must be conducted by September, ending a delay of nearly 10 years.

The direction came in response to a writ petition filed by Pradyot Kishore Manikya Deb Barman, who had approached the court alleging that authorities failed to hold the long-pending polls.

According to the petition and subsequent developments, the Tripura State Election Commission informed the Supreme Court through an affidavit that the election process for the Village Committees will begin in the first week of September and is expected to be completed within the same month.

Reacting to the order, Pradyot said the decision marks the end of a decade-long wait for people in the TTAADC areas and expressed that the restoration of the electoral process reflects the strength of constitutional rights. He added that sustained public support played a key role in pushing the matter forward.

He also stated that the upcoming elections would help bring development to the tribal regions and described the court’s direction as a significant relief for the people.

The issue had been raised through legal action highlighting the absence of Village Committee elections for around 10 years, which are crucial for local governance in the autonomous council areas.

The case has also been associated with the political efforts of Tipra Motha Party, which has been vocal about governance and rights in the TTAADC region.
