Fake TSECL employee caught in smart meter scam, booked

Date:

Agartala, 25th June 2026:   A formal complaint has been lodged at the Kalamchowra Police Station in Tripura against a man accused of posing as an employee of the Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL) and allegedly engaging in large-scale fraud involving electricity consumers, meter replacement, and misuse of official property.

According to the complaint submitted by the Boxanagar Electrical Sub-Division, the accused, identified as Raju Shiv, son of Narayan Shiv from Bishalgarh, allegedly impersonated a TSECL staff member for a prolonged period. He reportedly visited multiple households claiming that their newly installed smart meters were defective and needed replacement.

Officials allege that during these visits, he installed electricity meters allegedly stolen from other sub-divisions and used a fake identity card to gain the trust of consumers. He is also accused of collecting money from residents under false pretenses and unlawfully handling government property.

An internal inquiry by the electricity department reportedly identified several affected consumers. These include cases where meter seals were allegedly broken and electricity was used through bypass connections. In some instances, meters were allegedly shifted from one consumer’s home to another without authorization.

The complaint further references provisions under the Electricity Act, 2003, including Sections 138, 139, and 140, along with charges under Sections 420 (cheating) and 170 (impersonation of a public servant) of the Indian Penal Code.

Senior officials of the Boxanagar Electrical Sub-Division stated that the accused’s actions have damaged the reputation of the department and misled consumers. They have urged police to conduct a thorough investigation and take appropriate legal action.

The incident has caused concern among local residents, prompting authorities to advise consumers to verify official identity cards and authorization documents before allowing any electricity personnel into their homes. Police investigation is currently underway.
