Worms, Mold Allegedly Found in Ice Cream from Local Factory in South Tripura; Residents Demand Probe

Date:

Agartala, 28th June 2026:  Allegations of worms and mold being found in ice cream manufactured by the “Apon Ice Cream” factory, located in the Bir Chandra Manu area under Shantirbazar subdivision of South Tripura, have sparked concern among local residents over food safety standards.

According to local sources, several customers who purchased ice cream from a vendor at Bir Chandra Manu Market today claimed they discovered worms and mold-like spots inside the product while consuming it. The incident quickly drew public attention, triggering widespread concern in the area.

Residents alleged that the factory had faced complaints in the past regarding irregularities and the production of substandard food products. They further claimed that despite repeated allegations, no effective action had been taken by the Food Safety Department or the local administration.

When journalists visited the factory on Sunday to seek clarification, a worker reportedly said that prolonged power outages over the past few days may have caused the stored ice cream to spoil, leading to the formation of worms or mold. The worker also stated that no fresh ice cream had been produced during this period and that previously manufactured stock was still being supplied to the market. He claimed that the factory management was aware of the situation.

Local residents expressed serious concern, noting that the ice cream is widely consumed by schoolchildren as well as people of all age groups. They warned that the sale of spoiled or unhygienic food products could pose significant health risks to the public.

Residents have urged the authorities to conduct regular inspections of ice cream factories operating in the Shantirbazar subdivision to ensure compliance with food safety and hygiene standards. They also demanded an immediate investigation by the Food Safety Department and appropriate legal action against those found responsible.

As of the filing of this report, the administration has not issued any official statement regarding the allegations. The claims have not yet been independently verified.
