THRC Seeks DGP Report on Takarjala Woman Assault Incident

Date:

Agartala, 29th June 2026:  The Tripura Human Rights Commission (THRC), headed by Chairperson Justice Arindam Lodh, has taken suo motu cognizance of a reported assault case involving a woman in the Tata Kalibari area under Takarjala Police Station in West Tripura.

Acting on a newspaper report, the Commission noted allegations that no FIR was registered even after more than 72 hours of the incident, allegedly by the Officer-in-Charge of Takarjala Police Station, Rathin Debbarma. The report also raised concerns over the apparent lack of response from relevant bodies, including the State Women’s Commission and human rights authorities.

As per the report cited by the Commission, the victim was accused of having an “illicit relationship” and was called to a village-level “salishi” meeting, where she was allegedly assaulted. She was first admitted to Bishalgarh District Hospital and later referred to AGMC & GBP Hospital in Agartala for advanced treatment following serious injuries and surgery. The victim reportedly identified those involved while undergoing treatment.

The report also alleged intimidation of the victim’s family members by supporters of a political party during hospital visits.

Taking note of the seriousness of the allegations, the Tripura Human Rights Commission directed that the newspaper report and its order be sent to the Director General of Police (DGP), Tripura. The DGP has been asked to conduct a detailed inquiry and submit a comprehensive report.

The matter is scheduled for further hearing on July 27, 2026, when the DGP’s findings are expected to be placed before the Commission.
