Agartala, 8th July 2026: The Unakoti District Court on Wednesday sentenced a man to one year of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of ₹10,000 after convicting him of outraging a woman’s modesty and attempting to abduct her. In default of payment of the fine, he will have to undergo an additional two months of imprisonment. The judgment was delivered by District Judge P. Kumar.
Public Prosecutor Sunirmil Deb said the convict, Faydur Rahman, a resident of Fulbarikandi Gram Panchayat in Kailashahar and a mason’s assistant, had allegedly posed as a Hindu while working at a house construction site in Kalipur in 2020. He reportedly obtained the homeowner’s mobile number and repeatedly harassed her over the phone. After she blocked his number, he allegedly targeted her brother-in-law’s daughter with abusive and obscene calls.
According to the prosecution, on May 25, 2022, Rahman intercepted the young woman while she was returning from a driving school in Kalipur and allegedly attempted to abduct and molest her. She escaped and informed her family, following which a case was registered at Kailashahar Women’s Police Station on May 27.
The investigation, led by Sub-Inspector Shibani Debbarma, resulted in a charge sheet filed on June 14, 2022. During the trial, five witnesses testified, including the victim and investigating officer. The court convicted Rahman based on the evidence presented. Public Prosecutor Deb credited the successful prosecution to a thorough investigation and a well-prepared charge sheet.
