Agartala, 13th July 2026: Several houses, including that of the Upa-Pradhan of Kanchanmala Gram Panchayat, were inundated after floodwater entered homes in Kanchanmala Market under Sadar subdivision, sparking panic among residents.
According to locals, the flooding was triggered by unplanned pond excavation carried out by resident Liltu Debnath, who allegedly failed to construct a proper drainage system. As a result, continuous rainfall over the past few days caused waterlogging in parts of Kanchanmala East Market, leading to water entering the homes of Upa Pradhan Archut Roy, Madan Pal, and several others.
Residents claimed that this was the first time floodwater had entered the market area, as earlier there had been designated outlets for water drainage. They alleged that Debnath’s pond excavation blocked the natural flow of water, causing cracks in houses and raising fears of a major accident.
Locals further stated that complaints had been lodged with the administration when the pond was dug, but no action was taken at the time. Following Monday’s flooding, officials from Bikramnagar Tehsil and the DCM of Dukli Revenue Circle visited the site to assess the situation. An emergency meeting was later convened at Kanchanmala Gram Panchayat with local representatives to discuss immediate solutions.
