CITU leads massive protest in city over labour codes

Date:

Agartala, 15th July 2026:   The CITU Sadar Sub-divisional Committee on Wednesday led a massive demonstration through the capital streets demanding the immediate rollback of anti-worker labor codes and the cancellation of smart electricity meters. The mobilization called for a comprehensive protection of working-class rights.

While the protest march disrupted traffic on key routes, union leaders urged the public to note the steep rise in essential commodity prices and the systematic reduction of daily wages.

Party to the movement, union representatives state the crisis intensified following the implementation of new labor policies, which allegedly increase working hours without raising wages. The matter came to public attention after severe livelihood challenges were reported by local families, following which the committee initiated a protest rally under the West Tripura district.

Addressing reporters from a megaphone, a senior committee organizer raised serious concerns over the economic distress in rural and border areas. He questioned how local laborers managed to survive without the reinstatement of the old REGA scheme.

“This cannot be treated as an isolated policy lapse. The administration must determine how the poor will sustain themselves and whether a daily wage of 700 rupees will be guaranteed,” the organizer said.

The committee submitted a formal memorandum to the executive desk, demanding an immediate end to smart meter installations.
