Agartala, 24th July 2026: Three members of a family were found dead inside their residence at West Muhuripur under Shantirbazar subdivision in South Tripura on Friday, triggering a major police investigation.
The deceased have been identified as Shankar Chakraborty (52), his wife Chhabi Chakraborty (40), and their son Krishna Chakraborty (30). According to police, the bodies of Shankar and Chhabi were found lying in pools of blood inside the house, while Krishna’s body was discovered hanging in the same room.
On receiving information, personnel from Baikhora Police Station, Belonia Police Station, and South Tripura Additional Superintendent of Police rushed to the spot. A forensic team also visited the house and began collecting evidence.
Speaking to the media, the couple’s younger son, Mithun Chakraborty, said his elder brother Krishna worked for a private company and had returned home earlier than usual on Friday. According to Mithun, Krishna asked him to take a bath, saying that the family would go out together later. Krishna then sent him to his uncle’s house to collect a key.
When Mithun returned, he found the doors and windows locked from inside. After repeated calls went unanswered, he looked through a rear window and saw Krishna hanging. As he entered the house, he found his mother with her throat slit and his father lying in a blood-soaked condition on the floor.
Mithun alleged that Krishna had recently entered into a court marriage with a woman he loved. While their family had accepted the marriage, he claimed the bride’s family was opposed to the relationship and alleged they might be involved in the killings.
However, the Sub-Divisional Police Officer said the investigation is underway and no conclusions have been drawn so far. Police sources indicated that some aspects of the younger son’s account appeared inconsistent, with local residents also raising questions. Investigators reportedly found Krishna’s hands tied, adding further mystery to the case.
All three bodies have been sent to the morgue for post-mortem examination. Police have not detained anyone for questioning so far. Authorities are investigating all possible angles, including whether the deaths were the result of a triple murder or another sequence of events.
