Agartala, 30th July 2026 : If farmers stop producing agricultural products, development will not be possible and everything will collapse in the country. That is why Prime Minister Narendra Modi has given emphasis on working for the welfare and development of farmers, said Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister Ratan Lal Nath.
The Minister said this while laying the foundation stone of a modern rural market at a cost of Rs 4.6 crore in Palatana, Gomati district, under the initiative of the Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Department.
He also inaugurated a two-storey agricultural market built at a cost of Rs 2.2 crore at Tulamura Bazar and the two-storey building of Gorji Krishi Bazar built at a cost of Rs 3.12 crore.
“Government is providing so many facilities, but people are not taking interest in getting information. The government is providing various benefits for the welfare of the people. The present government is of the people, for the people and by the people. We are providing fertilizers to farmers; why should the middlemen get the benefit?” he said.
The Minister said that everyone must work for farmers and subsidies will be provided only to farmers.
“We are providing houses in the name of women. This fund is for the welfare of the people. This rural agricultural market is also for the welfare of farmers. You may have a lot of money, but what will happen if farmers stop cultivating rice, vegetables and other crops? Will you survive? Our farmers work day and night under the scorching heat. Prime Minister Modi has always said that farmers are ‘Annadata’. If agriculture is destroyed, no development will happen and everything will stop. Today, because of our agriculture and farmers, we are exporting many agricultural products. Our main resource is human resources. Now farmers are sitting on the stage,” said the Minister.
The Minister informed that there are currently a total of 554 agricultural markets in the state, of which 84 are primary wholesale markets. Out of these 84 primary wholesale markets, 21 are agricultural produce markets, while 470 are primary markets or rural markets.
“During the eight years from 2018-19 to 2025-26, a total of 204 market development works have been undertaken in the state, and the total amount allocated for this is Rs 461 crore 83 lakh 2 thousand. It is worth mentioning that during the five-year period from 2013 to 2017, infrastructure development work of a total of 71 markets was undertaken, for which the allocated expenditure was only Rs 20 crore 26 lakh 86 thousand 924,” said Minister Ratan Lal Nath.
The Minister further said that in the last seven and a half years, a total of 38 market development works have been undertaken in Gomati district, with an expenditure allocation of Rs 86 crore 93 lakh 64 thousand.
